Executive functions represent one of the main foundations of cognitive, emotional, and relational development in preschool age, affecting self-regulation, learning, planning, and problem-solving processes. From this perspective, the work examines the contribution that play and educational experiences can offer to their development, highlighting how a conscious pedagogical design can transform educational contexts into privileged opportunities to promote the child's growth.
Through a dialogue between scientific research and educational practice, the book examines physical activity, music education, educational computing, and image reading as examples of educational experiences that, in light of current theoretical and empirical evidence, appear promising for promoting executive functions in the early years of life. Rather than proposing prescriptive models, the volume offers a critical reflection on these contexts, suggesting that specific educational experiences can foster the development and enhancement of executive functions. In light of the currently available scientific evidence, this work paves the way for future research aimed at empirically verifying its effectiveness, with the goal of identifying the most appropriate ways through which these experiences can significantly contribute to the development of executive functions.
Aimed at educators, teachers, researchers, and university students, the book offers an interdisciplinary reading of the relationship between the development of executive functions and educational planning, valuing the dialogue between research and practice in early childhood contexts.
