Therefore, this concept, which is too often neglected by political reflection (apart from some of its false reemergences in right-wing nationalism), should instead be completely rethought from the perspective of the utopian federation of all the States of the planet described long ago by Kant. In globalization, democracy increasingly becomes the cardboard facade behind which the powers of that one percent of the global population, which today controls ninety-nine percent of the wealth, operate. Therefore, the word "democracy" ends up masking that the government of the demos is actually entrusted to the same financial oligarchy that is everywhere impoverishing the middle class, making Marx's dire predictions about the future of Capitalism relevant again after the abandonment of welfare policies. Sovereignty, in fact, is nothing more than the political aspect of that individual freedom which alone can establish democracy as a real form of government. From this point of view, sovereignty is nothing more than the rooting of political practice in ethics. Psychoanalysis is part of the great liberal movement, which, however, by disregarding the ideological and religious aspect, risks today being disarmed in the face of the reappearance of theocratic temptations, especially in jihadist terrorism. It is therefore understandable why the volume is completed by a text by Gian Luigi Brena S. J. on the difficulties and urgency of an ecumenical dialogue between Christianity and Islam.
