Description

"The Decline of the Gods" is an extensive historical novel, aiming to offer a fresco of the period between the 3rd and 4th centuries across sixteen volumes, when Christianity is on the path to becoming the most important religion of the Roman Empire. The narrative begins with the final convulsions of the pagan world, as the crisis of a civilization has become so profound that even a grand figure like Diocletian struggles to contain it, before Constantine puts an end to the nightmare of persecutions. From then on, Christianity's rise to a state religion proceeds triumphantly, with the exception of the brief setback by Julian the Apostate, who made the most determined, yet futile attempt to halt its ascent to save Greco-Roman rationalism.

This sixth volume of the series, set in the summer of 306, begins when the young Constantine in Britain is acclaimed emperor against the rules of the tetrarchy, and sends Tribune Aurelius to Nicomedia to request ratification from the Eastern Augustus Galerius. But in Nicomedia also lives Valeria, the woman he once loved and who is Galerius's wife. And the tribune's mission will turn into a confrontation with the past, as well as with the affairs of the empire.

Preface by Maresa Schembri.

«There was no doubt, however, that something unusual had happened, worthy of being preserved. For with you I had not only witnessed the scandal of youth lavish with wounds to the satyr that ensnares it, but I had become accustomed to much greater heights, capable of disturbing the mind no less than the mood.»

CITAZIONE:

«Non c’era dubbio, tuttavia, che qualcosa di insolito

fosse avvenuto, degno di essere conservato. Ché con

te non avevo soltanto constatato lo scandalo della

giovinezza prodiga di ferite al satiro che la insidia, ma

a ben altre altezze mi ero assuefatto, capaci di turbare

il pensiero non meno dell’umore.»
