"The Decline of the Gods" is an extensive historical novel, aiming to offer in sixteen volumes a depiction of the period between the 3rd and 4th centuries, when Christianity was on the path to becoming the most important religion of the Roman Empire. The narrative begins with the final throes of the pagan world, at a time when the crisis of a civilization had become so profound that even a grand figure like Diocletian struggled to contain it, before Constantine put an end to the nightmare of persecutions. From then on, the triumphant rise of Christianity to the status of state religion proceeded, with the exception of the brief setback caused by Julian the Apostate, who made the most determined, yet futile attempt to halt its ascent in order to save Greco-Roman rationalism.
This sixth volume of the series, set in the summer of 306, begins when the young Constantine in Britain is proclaimed emperor against the rules of the tetrarchy, and sends the tribune Aurelius to Nicomedia to request ratification from the Eastern Augustus Galerius. But in Nicomedia also lives Valeria, the woman he once loved and who is now Galerius's wife. The tribune's mission will turn into a confrontation with the past, as well as with the events of the empire.
