An evolutionary distortion of the developing mind or its inescapable trait? Or an inescapable preface to social communication? Lying as an expression of a creative or emotionally dissonant mind? The different and surprising paths of the 'pretending' mind and its possible intentions are reflections that, naturally and in a fluid language, traverse and intertwine on the psychological and mental couplet truth–lie or truth–deception. It appears to us as a universally human phenomenon, with a necessary nod to ethical reflections in order to address the issue of personal and interpersonal identity. In the first part, by dwelling on the human tendency to deceive, it proposes a reading of it as a timeless phenomenon, rooted in the most diverse historical-literary and cultural manifestations, up to the current global configuration of mass communications. In the second part, the radical nature of this tendency pertaining to the human mind is emphasized, receiving in return an "anthropological cipher" in the ambiguities and discrepancies emerging from the human being as animal symbolicum. Beyond a sociological reading oriented in a deconstructionist sense, deceitful falsification traverses a plethora of aspects, from philosophy to anthropology, from science to epistemology, thus nourishing any curiosity in the peculiar field and opening up to a lively and knowledgeable reading.
