During Hadrian's journey to Britain, his secretary, the historian Suetonius, receives a visit from an old centurion who says he wants to tell him about his life.
For Philip, a simple fisherman from Tyre in 1st century Syria, when the great revolt breaks out in nearby Judea and Rome is forced to quell it, a new existence begins.
Enlisted as a legionary, he takes part in the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem and the siege of Masada, but soon the ancient Phoenician spirit drives him to go beyond, to discover, like his ancestors, the limits of the known lands.
Over the years, he thus crosses the Empire, from Palestine to Rome, from Gaul to the North of Britain, up to the bloody battle of Mons Graupius.
If, after the victory, the legions withdraw and Rome decides to stop, it will not be the same for him: he has heard of an ancient Celtic legend and his final endeavor will be to bring it back to reality.
“The man did not matter in what was happening. Something much more immense above us was grinding indifferent history.”
