On the outskirts of Genoa, among stairs, arcades, and shops that become an integral part of the story, move the lives of the sisters Cetta and Doris Materazzi. Proud and pragmatic, Cetta is forced to give up her dream of becoming a doctor after a bad investment, prompted by her sister Doris, ruins the family, already strained by her husband Piero's illness. To survive, she assumes the identity of Oksana, a Ukrainian caregiver.
Around her, stories of family grudges, unresolved grief, exploited young migrants, and figures embodying the darker side of contemporary society intertwine. The disappearance of Baba, a young black boy, and the discovery of a "farm" where migrant boys are exploited, reveal a network connecting local crime and corrupt institutions.
Between social novel and urban noir, Le sorelle Materazzi tells the difficult relationship between two sisters marked by real and perceived guilt, staging a story of pain, resilience, and the possibility of collective redemption.
